Staff Training & Development

Professional development helps employees continue to not only be competent in their profession, but also excel in it. It should be an ongoing process that continues throughout an individual’s career. SAC is committed to helping our staff find these opportunities at CofC.

Take College Courses for Free

Thanks to the Staff Training Program, staff in permanent positions with at least six months of employment can take one class each fall and/or spring semester (see application for additional restrictions). And the best part is, it’s free.

Employees may enroll in any course (assuming any prerequisites are met), even if the course doesn’t directly relate to their professional fields.

How to apply: The registration deadlines are June 1 (for fall courses), November 1 (for spring courses) and April 1 (for summer courses). No applications can be accepted after this deadline.

To take courses through the Staff Training Program, employees must be eligible for admission at the College and hold a permanent position (full or part-time of at least 30 hours per week) or be employed in a temporary grant-funded position, or time-limited project position with at least six months of state employment service on or before the course start date. You may contact the Office of Human Resources to verify your employment status. You may contact Admissions to discuss your admissions process.

Employees can take one course per fall and/or spring semester excluding Maymester/Summer. Maymester/Summer staff training is reserved for faculty and staff who did not take a course in the fall and/or spring semesters.

Employees can access the application form on the Employee tab of their MyCharleston account. After selecting the Employee tab, locate the application under Employee Forms: Staff Application for Credit Course. Additionally, this form is available via Yammer, or you may contact HR or Admissions at or 843.953.5670 for an application.

Eligible courses may be available at other state colleges (ex: the Citadel). Please contact HR for details.
